Chapter Fourteen

‘Let’s eat.’

Helen swung around to stare at Jay. ‘Now?’ God, she was dying to see what he had in that bag and he wanted to eat?

‘A man has to keep his strength up.’ He strolled into the kitchen and opened the huge Viking refrigerator. ‘I know there’s some chicken in here somewhere.’

With a sigh and a last wistful look back at the bedroom, Helen sat on one of the bar stools by the high granite countertop.

‘You hungry, doc?’

She licked her lips and eyed the perfection of his denim-clad ass, the only part of him she could see.

‘I’ll have something if you are.’

He emerged from the cavernous refrigerator, a plateful of chicken sandwiches wrapped in Cling Wrap in his hand.

Helen raised her eyebrows. ‘Is that a new kind of appliance that makes the sandwiches for you?’

He shrugged as he placed them on the table. ‘Nope, it’s the magic of room service. My brother introduced me to it and now I’m addicted.’ He returned to the fridge and took out two beers. ‘Here you go.’

Helen looked pointedly around the kitchen. ‘Don’t you have plates or napkins?’

He scratched his chin. ‘Sure, somewhere. Take a look, knock yourself out.’

She started opening cupboards and retrieved some fine white china and glasses.

By the time she sat back down, Jay had already finished his first sandwich and was starting on another. Helen pushed a plate in front of him and he grunted his thanks. She slowly ate one sandwich, taking her time, enjoying watching him eat and not bother to talk to her.

He pointed at the glass. ‘What’s that for?’

‘Your beer.’

‘Only wussies use a glass. Anyway, I’ve already drunk it.’ He leered at her. ‘I’m in a hurry, honey. How about you?’

Holding his eyes, Helen picked up her beer and brought it to her lips. His gaze intensified as she slowly swallowed. She couldn’t quite manage the whole bottle but the effect was worth it. Jay had forgotten the remaining sandwich and was totally focused on her. She put it down and wiped her mouth against the back of her hand.

‘I’m ready whenever you are, “honey”.’

She squeaked as he closed in on her and swung her up into his arms. She pretended to struggle, but realized she really liked feeling so helpless and feminine. God, she hoped his knee was OK.

He kicked the door shut behind them and deposited her on the middle of the bed. She lay there looking up at him, admiring the intensity of his expression as he studied her body. He stripped off his blue-checked shirt, each snap distinct in the silence.

She kept still when he bent over her, removed her clothes and tossed them onto the floor. He knelt between her thighs, the seams of his jeans rubbing against her soft skin.

‘Stay right there.’

He got off the bed leaving her feeling cold without the heat of his body close to hers. When he returned she heard the rustling of paper and plastic being ripped apart. She didn’t dare turn her head to see exactly what he was doing.
